BC Hydro has been urging British Columbians to cut back on consumption for many years through its Power Smart programs. Some people wonder why an energy company would ask its customers to buy less of its product, but in fact it's in the company's interest to avoid the high cost of new generation by asking us to use less electricity. And of course it's in our interest too.
Now the British Columbia government has added its voice to the call for energy conservation by mandating, though the 2007 BC Energy Plan, that 50% of the province's new electricty needs must be met through conservation.

The call for British Columbians to conserve energy has been reiterated in the recent Government Throne Speech (Feb. 12th, 2008).
