Welcome to VIU Fully Online Courses (Moodle)
1. Check Your System
If you have not already done so, let's ensure your Internet Browser is configured properly and that you have all the necessary software in place to complete your online course!
Click requirements - http://www.viuonline.ca/students/requirements.php to access a web page that will automatically check your computer:
- A Green
on the requirements screen will indicate a specific requirement is OK.
- A Red X on the requirements screen will indicate you need to make a change to Internet Settings or download some necessary software by following the directions presented on the screen.
2. Access Moodle
At the present time we maintain several Moodle sites. For most courses, you will be using either of the two Moodle locations below (for other locations, click here):
- Main Moodle instance = http://moodle.viuonline.ca (General courses here)
- Health & Human Services = http://hhs.viuonline.ca (Nursing, CYC, Social Services Dip, etc)
Once you have determined which moodle website you are using - go to that website - and follow the instructions below:
LOG INTO MOODLE
- Under "Username" and "Password" enter your Discovery account information (the same account you log into VIU computers with).
- If you are new to VIU or have forgotten your Discovery password information, visit: http://entrance.capitan.mala.bc.ca/student/studentaccounts/creaccount.htm
OnCe You successfully log into moodle

Under Courses categories, click the appropriate area
- Find the appropriate course link (instructor & section number)
- You will be asked to enter an "enrolment key" (This is a "secret word" that will allow you to enroll in the course). The enrolment key was provided to you in a separate email, please refer to that email. (If you don't have the enrolment key, please contact your instructor or write us at online@viu.ca.)
Enrolment Key Required
- You need only follow this enrolment procedure once per course in which you are registered.
- Once you have access, please contact your instructor and let him know you have successfully accessed the course. We also recommend you get ready to start classes by reviewing the course structure, syllabus, schedule, assignments, etc.

4. Attendance Required
Login on the course start date!
You must log in to your online course ASAP on the official course start date listed in the VIU timetable. Immediately send your Instructor a course mail message to record your attendance!
- If you are currently on the wait list for a course, you must log in to the online course no later than midnight on the course start date in order to confirm that you are still interested if a seat becomes available!
Similar to a campus-based course – "attendance" on the first day of class will prevent you from being recorded as a "no show" and the potential of losing your seat.
- If you are not able to access your online course by the end of the course start date, please notify your Instructor immediately by email or phone!
